Waves The Album

Today is the day Mat McHugh has been working towards over the past months, crafting a new album titled WAVES and now making it available to music fans around the world as a FREE download from www.wavesthealbum.com.

Says Mat “I’m super happy that my brand new album WAVES is finished and ready to download. I worked really hard on this one and I think it’s one of the best I’ve ever done (and I’m not just saying that! haha). My hope is that you’ll enjoy it and share with all your people in the spirit that it was given, with love.”

People who have already registered to receive WAVES on its day of release have been sent access to the album today. Everyone else can start downloading WAVES from today.

“Being an independent artist relies on word of mouth and the support of good people. Obviously it’s hard to pay rent from giving away albums for free but my theory is that, hopefully, the music and the message with speak for themselves and that people will like it and, in turn, come to see a live show one day. And, if that happens, then another album can be made and so on and so on” says Mat.

The WAVES Tour around Australia commences on October 1st (see dates below) showcasing songs from WAVES plus material from Mat’s prior solo effort Love Come Save Me and with the occasional gem from his deep catalogue of songs from The Beautiful Girls and Seperatista SoundSystem projects in the mix as well.

“I’m touring with a couple of amazing musicians, and great friends, wherever this album takes us” says McHugh. “Ian Pritchett (producer/mixer of every MM/TBG album as well as Angus and Julia and Boo Seeka) will be on guitars, bass, keys and basically every instrument we can manage to fit in the tour bus. Paul Derricott who played drums with me on the Love Come Save Me tour and the Live at Random Hall album will be back on the kit. Dude crushes it. I’ll be the one playing acoustic guitar and trying to remember the words”

Download WAVES FREE from www.wavesthealbum.com and share the link widely.

“I’d love to give these records away for free forever. And, I will, as long as I’m able” says Mat

“All I really want people to do is download it, play it, play it again, love it, feel it, crank it up, sing it at the top of their lungs and come see us tour so we can all sing the songs together. I want to always try and contribute positive vibes to the World and connect with people that feel the same way. This is the best way I know how. I am truly very thankful for the support I receive from people who love and share my music. Every day”.

Waves Tour & Free Download

Mat McHugh has a new album. It is called WAVES as in, vibrations. The vibrations that connect everyone and everything. The waves of energy that we all shimmer in and of. Simple magic. And he is going out on a tour of the same name.

As with his last solo effort Love Come Save Me, Mat is going to be giving WAVES away as a free digital download so that people can hear and share the music around the World.

The first song to be made available from WAVES is SIDEWAYS – a mix of confessional lyrics, acoustic guitars, driving dub influenced rhythms and melodic lines synthesized by Mat sampling his voice and other assorted items he had lying around the studio.

The song is available as an immediate free download here.

“WAVES is inspired by my father, who passed away when I was ten. One of my fondest memories of him is his love for his guitar, an old acoustic that he used to play around the house on a regular basis. When I was cleaning out some things last year, I stumbled upon that exact guitar and decided to see if I could fix it up. I wanted to see if it still had any songs in it. With a bit of tweaking and restringing I was able to bring it back to life, recreating that sound I remember so clearly from my childhood. That guitar is responsible for WAVES – every song was written on it and it made its way onto every track on the album”.

Summer Soundsystem Tour

TBG.SummerSS_Website.Header_Full.Tour_1024x308px

Summer’s here again and for Australia that means the beach, friends, good times and The Beautiful Girls. And, in what has become a summertime tradition, The Beautiful Girls collective are hitting the road to chase the sun.

For front man Mat McHugh, who juggles his love of both music and surfing in equal measures, Summer 2015 is the perfect time to combine his passions, this time in the form of the Summer Sound System tour, which sees the collective hitting over a dozen surfing meccas along the Australian coastline.Delivering familiar staples from the past as well as tracks from the brand new Beautiful Girls studio album ‘Dancehall Days’, The Summer Sound System tour is the perfect Summer soundtrack.

“Music is something that really propels me creatively, but there’s something about the ocean that I can’t ever do without,” said McHugh. “I always get asked whether I was a musician that surfs or a surfer who plays music. I don’t think I have an answer—they are both part of who I am and for me, there’s no better way to spend Summer than being able to combine the two. Summer tours in Australia have been a tradition of ours and they are, without a doubt, my favourite part of the year.”

The sun drenched, reggae-tinged surfside music already has international reps branding The Beautiful Girls as a “Must see” live act, while The Summer Sound System tour promises good vibes to local audiences.

Dancehall Days Tour

It’s been quite some time since The Beautiful Girls hit the road, but the drought is over with the announcement today of their brand new album “Dancehall Days” (released through MGM October 3). To celebrate, The Beautiful Girls are dancing their way around Australia, bringing back the unique live music celebration that fans have missed over the last few years of the band’s hiatus.

Performing the songs of singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist/producer Mat McHugh, The Beautiful Girls became one of Australia’s most recognised roots music monikers, resulting in over 250,000 albums sales and nearly a decade of touring, both here and abroad. Since the act’s last activity in 2012, McHugh has been busy exploring a life, experiencing the world, looking for inspiration, releasing a solo album, working with the close collective that formed the core of The Beautiful Girls and continuing to write the songs that eventually became ‘Dancehall Days’.

“I started writing the next album with the intention of it being a Mat McHugh album but the songs started taking on a life and sound of their own,” said McHugh. “When I stood back from them I was able to see that I was being steered into a particular direction. They all sounded like ‘The Beautiful Girls’. It’s hard to explain it but I know it when I hear it. Spooky, dubby, digital dancehall tinged, rootsy, punky, reggae music mashed up with some mellow acoustic sea songs. In some ways it’s about reclaiming my musical identity”.

The Beautiful Girls’ new album and live show sees McHugh at his experimental best, borrowing from genres, experiences and revelations to create a new chapter in The Beautiful Girls songbook, with musical messages as exploratory and poignant as they were at the release of the first EP some twelve years ago.

Launched with a Pledge campaign, “Dancehall Days” will take McHugh’s “direct to fan” ethos (he was doing it a decade ago…. before it had a name) and involve fans from around the world in every step of the process.
The album will be released independently (through MGM distribution) on October 3 with The Beautiful Girls hitting the road once more bringing the familiar and the soon-to-be-familiar songs of one of Australia’s best loved indie acts back to fans.

As McHugh puts it, “To me, music is far too precious to exist in a box, I think a song is born and dies in a moment and in that, becomes a new definition. Playing live, I never know what’s going to happen and that’s exactly the way I like it. As long as there is love there though, everything will be okay”.
